What Is Craniosacral Therapy? A Gentle Path to Nervous System Relief
What Most People Don’t Expect
Most people who come in for craniosacral therapy are a little skeptical at first. The touch is so light, so unhurried, that it doesn’t feel like much is happening. And then, somewhere in the middle of a session, something shifts. The breath deepens. The body lets go of something it has been holding for a very long time.
That quiet, profound release is what craniosacral therapy is known for. And it is exactly what so many nervous systems are hungry for right now.
What Is Craniosacral Therapy?
Craniosacral therapy is a gentle, hands-on treatment that works with the craniosacral system, the membranes and fluid that surround and protect the brain and spinal cord. By listening to the subtle rhythms of this system and releasing restrictions in the tissue, craniosacral therapy supports the body’s natural capacity to heal and regulate itself.
It was developed by osteopathic physician John Upledger in the 1970s, building on earlier work by William Sutherland. At Wolf Acupuncture, this work is informed by training through the Upledger Institute.
Craniosacral therapy can help with:
• Nervous system dysregulation and burnout
• Chronic tension in the head, neck, and jaw
• Stored stress and trauma held in the body
• Headaches and migraines
• Anxiety and difficulty settling
• Pain that has not responded to other treatments
How It Works
The craniosacral system has its own gentle rhythm, separate from the breath and heartbeat. A trained practitioner can feel this rhythm through light touch and use it as a guide to where the body is holding restriction or bracing.
By working with rather than against the body’s own intelligence, craniosacral therapy helps the nervous system shift out of a state of chronic activation and into genuine rest. This is not relaxation in the surface sense. It is a deeper physiological settling that can have lasting effects on pain, tension, mood, and sleep.
What to Expect in a Session
You will remain fully clothed throughout the session, lying comfortably on a treatment table. The work is done in stillness and quiet.
Touch is applied at the head, the sacrum, and the feet, as well as other areas of the body as needed. The pressure is extremely light, often described as the weight of a nickel. Many people find themselves drifting into a deeply relaxed state, somewhere between waking and sleep, where the nervous system feels safe enough to finally unwind.
Sessions are available as a standalone 30-minute treatment, which may be covered in part through insurance with a superbill. Craniosacral therapy is also integrated into acupuncture and microneedling sessions when appropriate, deepening the effects of the treatment as a whole.
Who It Is For
Craniosacral therapy is particularly well suited for people who feel like they are always bracing, always anticipating the next hard thing, always running just slightly too fast. It is also a good fit for those who have tried other approaches to chronic pain or tension and found only partial relief.
Because the touch is so gentle, it is safe and appropriate for people at most stages of life, including those who find deeper bodywork too intense or activating.
